| Abstract |
As leading telecom company in Belgium, Belgacom has completed numerous acquisitions, initiated several technological innovations, and undergone major business (r)evolutions to establish its global leadership on the market. To respond quickly to changing customer needs, Belgacom has launched different data migration projects. Data Migration programs remain an often underestimated effort in the organisation. Nevertheless a well-defined, organised and industrialised approach to data migration can serve several business goals and result in a considerable return for the organisation. The process of data migration typically consists of four phases: - analysis of source data - Extraction and transformation of data - validation and cleansing of data - uploading and reconciling the data in the new system
Often the most sensitive phase is validation/data cleansing. In this phase, data is evaluated for potential problems which are flagged and identified for the user. The emphasis put on this last phase is very important for the user. We will help him to build his ‘golden records’ by any means possible, such as record de-normalizations, data standardization, inaccuracies, and duplications removal …
This presentation will enlighten you on the business goals that can be achieved and on a best-practices approach to large data migration programs. |
